We’re Here... We See You... And We’re Not
Backing Down.

On Wednesday, May 20th, citizens from across Mississippi descended on
Jackson to make one thing unmistakably clear: we will not stand silently while our voting rights are stripped away.
​
From Hattiesburg, many of us boarded a charter bus early that morning,
riding together in solidarity toward the Capitol. We rode with a sense of
purpose – lay leaders, activists, students, working people, retirees,
neighbors, and friends all united by the belief that the right to vote is sacred and worth fighting for.
The moment we walked into the convention center, the atmosphere was electric and the energy was unmatched. People were fired up, focused, and fully aware of what is at stake in this moment. Instead of discouragement, there was determination. Instead of disappointment, there was resolve.
The room pulsed with a collective understanding that this fight is bigger than one rally, one march, or one news cycle. This is about protecting democracy itself. It is about ensuring that every eligible citizen - regardless of race, income, zip code, or political affiliation - has equal access to the ballot box.

Speaker after speaker reminded us that our ancestors endured intimidation, violence and impossible odds so future generations could exercise the right to vote. We owe it to them -and to those coming after us - not to surrender that right quietly. What became abundantly clear in Jackson is this: people are paying attention. Communities are organizing and citizens are engaged. And despite every attempt to discourage participation, the movement for voting rights is growing stronger, louder, and more unified.

The optics may have changed because of the weather, but the message did not. And after what we witnessed in Jackson, one thing is certain: Mississippi is awake and on the move.
​
Now comes the hard part. Rallies inspire, but action changes outcomes. We must continue organizing in our communities, educating voters, helping people obtain the documents they need, registering new voters, and making sure every single person gets to the polls in November.

On the eve of this momentous day the threat of rain loomed large, and organizers made the difficult decision to relocate the event inside at the Jackson Convention Complex. That change brought uncertainty. There would be no rally on the Capitol steps. No sweeping photo of thousands standing shoulder to shoulder outside to send a message to those attempting to dilute and suppress our voices that we will not be silenced.

For a moment, many of us wondered if the shift in venue would also shift the energy.
​
It didn't.
